Celebrate National Month of Puppetry with PuppetART Theater!
Detroit, MI – In 1929, a puppeteer by the name of Paul McPharlin created the Marionette Fellowship located near the corner of Woodward and Hancock, and in 1936 the Fellowship held the first National Puppetry Conference Festival in Detroit. The conference events were held at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Hotel Webster Hall and the Artisan Guild. The Festival brought together prominent Puppeteers from all over the United States and Canada to celebrate puppetry and share new works. The events of this conference led to the formation of the Puppeteers of America the following year.PuppetART: Detroit Puppet Theater will commemorate the events of 1936 during its 13th annual Month of Puppetry held in April. In addition to PuppetART’s month-long production of “Turtle Island” the Month will culminate in an annual Day of Puppetry celebration on April 28, 2012. The Day of Puppetry will delight children of all ages and include traditional Native American festivities and pay tribute to the art of puppetry. April Performance Breakdown for “Turtle Island”,
“Turtle Island” is a parable inspired by the legend that came from the heart and soul of the Native People of North America. Combining different types of puppets, amazing light effects, and live actors and masks the story tells how two brothers struggled to understand that people are a living part of the natural world, that all things are connected.*Recommended for ages 7 and upThursday 10 a.m. April 19Saturdays 2 p.m. April 7, 14, 21, 28

PuppetART was formed by a trio of Russian puppeteers, all theater professionals in 1995. They began as a touring company and performed throughout Michigan, and in other parts of the US. In 1998, the troupe established its own theater in downtown Detroit. PuppetART is the only professional resident puppet theater in Southeast Michigan offering year round weekly performances in conjunction with hands-on puppet making workshops and museum tours.
