The last time I had witnessed the magic of "The Lion King" my now 17 year old son had not even started kindergarten, it had been way too long. I have to admit that as soon as I learned that we would be able to attend I was ecstatic, this musical is just beyond words.
In exchange for promoting this show, my husband, my dad, my friend and I all attended last night's performance. Rafiki's opening number was spectacular, so if you are going, don't be late. The costumes, props and set design were just amazing. They are colorful, intricate and cleverly designed to aid in the telling of Simba's tale.
The choreography was fun to watch. I just sat through the whole show entranced by the spell cast on me and the rest of the crowd as the dancers moved about the stage with such grace. The lion like movements by the young actors was fantastic.
And of coarse there is the music, oh the music. My personal favorite, as mentioned before, was the opening number, which had me in tears within seconds. "The Lion King" mixes the old music of the movie with a few new tunes. I was really looking forward to hearing "I Just Can't Wait to be King" and felt a twinge of disappointment because it lacked the energy I was hoping to feel.
Overall, it was a great performance and I would highly recommend that you go to see this show while it is in Detroit. "The Lion King" will be at the Detroit Opera House through March 10th. You can get your tickets online through ticketmaster.com.
